VFW Post 11447: September 2006 Meeting Minutes

Post Senior Vice Commander Boruff called the meeting to order at 1000 on Wednesday, 13 Sep 2006.

There were 21 members in attendance.

Comrade Alvarez gave the opening prayer.

SVC led attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and Section 3 of the Congressional Charter.

The Roll Call was taken by the Adjutant and absentees noted.

SVC called for new recruits:
None

SVC called for distinguished guests:
None

SVC asked if the minutes from the previous meeting had been posted:
The Adjutant reported they had, and no comments or changes had been made. Comrade Alvarez made motion to accept the minutes as written, seconded by JVC Corbin. Carried.

SVC called for the report of the Quartermaster:
QM Burnett presented the report. Trustees audited report on 11 Sep. Comrade Alvarez made the motion to accept the report as presented, seconded by Comrade Best. Carried. The report is on file at the Post home, if anyone who wants to see the report contact the Quartermaster.

SVC called for the Service Officer’s report:
Service Officer reported that Charlie Loughridge is out of the hospital, Comrade Gary Blanchfield died while on vacation in Malaysia . Comrade Hales is in the hospital. Post Commander Correll is out of the hospital and at home resting.

Commander called for the Surgeon's report:

PHC Report:
1. Post Home Committee: Report of 29 Aug special meeting read by PHC Chairman. Chairman Cox called the meeting to order at 0900. Eleven members and Canteen Manager were present.

The following recommendations were approved:
a. Promote Cora as Manager for 90-day probation period. Have Comrade Nirza train cooks, order stock and assist manager in food operations.

b. Pay severance pay to two security guards on 31 Aug and hire one guard from security agency starting 1 Sep.

c. Sell 5 old bar stools and bar to Comrade Phillips for $150. The money is to go towards buying a meat slicer.

d. Look into cost of buying barbwire to secure back area.

e. Use $2500 from Building Fund to purchase 55 safes and sell them for P3500. Profit from sales will go to General Fund, principle to Building Fund.

f. P35,000 to be paid Canteen Manager for back pay. P12,000 to be paid to Comrade Nirza for compensation for paying canteen employees. P52,000 to be paid for electric bills out of General Fund.

Audits and Reviews

  1. End of month canteen inventory was done by PHC on Wed, 28 Aug. Canteen audit was done by trustees on Thu, 29 Aug due to change of Canteen Manager. Chairman Cox reviewed Profit and Loss statement and found it to be true and correct.

  2. Meeting was adjourned at 10:30.

The meeting was adjourned at 1000 hours.

Membership Committee:
Adjutant gave report. Life 356, New 4, Reinst 0, Cont 10, Total 370, for 91.36%. Two applications being processed. Need 16 new or reinstated members to reach 100%

Amerasian Scholarship Committee:

Buddy Poppy Chairman: Comrade Alvarez reported P425 ($8.50) was collected for the Relief Fund.

Seam Squirrel Report:
Comrade Phillips reported that the scratch was held 7 Sep and went well, although turnout was low. Grand Deputy Inspector Emory Russell conducted Pup Tent inspection, no problems with audit.

Beach Bash:
JVC Corbin said that meetings for the Beach Bash will begin next Tuesday, 19 Sep. Need volunteers for the event.

CofA:
Registration is going well. All who plan to attend even if you are not going to stay at a local hotel need to register so that we know who is going and whether they will attend the banquet or not and name tags can be made. Dates 8-10 Dec.

Comrade Alvarez led the membership in reciting the National Home Prayer.

NEW BUSINESS

1. . SVC Boruff explained the situation of the safes on sale at the Canteen as reported by PHC. He said that Lee Andersen loaned $2500 to the Post to purchase 55 safes. There was not enough time for a Special Meeting to be called due to limited time the safes would be available. The safes are being sold for P3500 ($70) with the principle going to the Building Fund and profit to the General Fund if approved by membership. Four safes have been sold since 1 Sep. Motion was made for $2500 to be taken from Building Fund to repay Lee Andersen and that the principle will go back into the Fund with profit going to General Fund. Seconded by Comrade Alvarez. After lengthy discussion vote was taken. Carried.

2. Comrade Phillips said that the VFW Horse Shoe team brings income into the canteen. He made the motion that the Post pay the P700 entry fee for the season of 12 weeks and become a budget item in the next years budget. Seconded by JVC Corbin. Carried.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

1. Comrade Brady said that the FRA bought a safe and when he opened the safe he found that the batteries were leaking, Adjutant also had the same problem. Comrade Brady suggested that all safes be open and batteries remove and safe cleaned and the package be resealed and marked “Opened for removal of batteries”. New batteries should be given when safe is purchased.

2. Comrade Nirza who is training the cooks at the canteen and showing the manager canteen operations made a few statements. He said more members need to utilize the canteen. He also said that the condition of the kitchen is in a sad state. When asked how long it would take to do repairs and clean the kitchen he said one week. He said the kitchen is also a fire hazard at present. SVC asked what is the feasibility of closing the kitchen and cost of repairs, etc. Comrade Nirza did not know the cost. The PHC was tasked with evaluation the cost of repairs and estimate of amount of time it would take.

3. . JVC Corbin asked the membership to seek students (must be U.S. citizens) for Voice of Democracy/Patriot Pen contest. VOD is High School students, Patriot Pen elementary students. .

4. Comrade Gross (RAO Director) said that RAO dues would remain the same as last year with a discount if paid early. He also said that members who have not gotten their new ACR-I need to get moving. Anyone found with the old paper ACR can be fined and other actions taken. The Shriners will participate in the Post's Medical/Dental Outreach program this year, but they are short of funds and the hospitals where they use to get supplies have been close. But they will do their best.

5. Adjutant Burnett told the members that the new life membership prices have been approved and will go into affect 1 Jan 2007. Prices increased over 70%. Old and new rates are:

Continuous membership dues are also going up. The Post will increase CM dues to $30.

6. SVC said that the Chaplain will now say prayers for POW/MIA and 9/11 victims, followed by a 2 Bell Ceremony by the Surgeon John T. Brady and assisted by the Chaplain. Ceremony held.

7. Chaplin Alvarez reminded members of the raffle being held at American Legion Post 4 on the 15 th of Sep. There will also be a ceremony at 11a.m. for POW/MIA. Representatives from all vet organizations in the area will attend. All members are invited and if they can wear their VFW or Cootie shirts/uniforms.

8. 50/50 Raffle was won by Comrade Cox. Total of P1900 was collected, P950 to the Building Fund and P950 to Comrade Cox.

Comrade Alvarez gave the Closing Prayer.

Commander adjourned the meeting at 1055. Next meeting will be held at the Post Home at 1000, Wednesday 11 Oct 2006.
