VFW Post 11447: November 2011 Meeting Minutes

OPENING CEREMONIES:Commander Doty called the meeting to order at 1000 hours, 9 Nov.  Opening ceremonies were held according to VFW Ritual. 14 Post  members were present.

ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS: The Roll Call was taken by Adjutant Burnett.  Thirteen Officers were present; two officers were absent both excused. 

NEW RECRUITS: None

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS: None

MINUTES: Commander asked if the minutes from the previous meeting had been posted.  The adjutant said that a copy of the minutes were posted on the bulletin board and sent to members via email. The minutes are also available on the website www.vfw11447.org.  No changes were made.  The Adjutant made the motion to accept the minutes as written, seconded by JVC Middleton, motion carried.

QUARTERMASTER REPORT: Commander called for the report of the Quartermaster: QM Burnett presented the report and made the motion to accept the report as presented, seconded by Comrade Best, motion carried. The audit was conducted on 9 Nov.

SERVICE OFFICER REPORT: Dental Outreach will be held on 12 Nov 8-12 noon. Medical supplies have been ordered and six dentists are committed with the possibility of two more. Due to the burial at Clark on Saturday during the same time as the outreach, the Commander, QM and several other members of the Post will not be able to attend.  Request anyone who can make it to please show up and lend a hand or just show your presence.  This is our biggest community project for the year. (Note:  The Outreach was very successful; the Dentists were able to help 148 patients and pulled 217 teeth in the four hour period.  Comrade Middleton donated drinks for the event totaling nearly P1500.   Comrades Jerry Rowe and David Houle did a great job in setting up and running the event.)

SURGEON'S REPORT:Ray Smith is out of the hospital and at home.

COMRADE OR FAMILY MEMBER IN DISTRESS: Ray Smith still in Gordon Hospital. Carletto Pickering, who suffered a stroke a couple of weeks ago, is at home and doing better. 

COMMANDER CALLED FOR COMMITTEE REPORTS:

MEMBERSHIP REPORT: QM Burnett gave the report. National has published the new memstats for 2011-2012.

The three new Life Members that were recruited this term are included in the life figure of 357.

CofA: Commander said that the dates for the Convention are 11-14 June. The venue for the convention wants a deposit of $6000.  Commander has contacted the Department.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: A sign up sheet for Christmas present donations has been put up on the door at the VFW.  Money can be given to the Canteen cashier. Christmas Party is scheduled for 18 Dec at Mango's.

BUDDY POPPY CHAIRMAN: P400 was collected at the meeting.

BUILDING COMMITTEE: Commander said that if anyone did not notice the new sign has been installed and looks good especially at night when the lights are on.  There was an increase in cost by P2000 because when the face of the sign was removed many lights were burned out and other problems.  All bulbs replaced and some ballast and starters.  Hopefully they will last several years as the sign would have to be taken down to replace bulbs.

BEACH BASH COMMITTEE: At the last meeting only 4 people showed up.  Commander said that we need more participation; another meeting is scheduled for 15 Nov at10am.  If we do not get more participation/volunteers we may have to cancel the Beach Bash.

PUP TENT 11: SSeam Squirrel Best said that they had a good Scratch.  Cootie Jerry Rowe asked for assistance at the Dental Outreach. 

POST HOUSE COMMITTEE: Comrade Mike Best gave the report. The Commander, QM and PHC members had a meeting on 7 Nov.  The Canteen Profit and Loss Statement was reviewed.  Statement showed a monthly profit of P45984 which includes the inventory.  Canteen on hand cash balance was P6211 ($148) on 31 Oct.

VFW NATIONAL HOME FOR CHILDREN: Commander asked the Chaplain to say a prayer for our National Home for Children.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

The bugle has been ordered and the Post voted approval for VFW portion of cost of $150.  Beside the Post FRA Branch 367 will pay $150. FRA Branch 74 and American Legion Post 4 have shown interest, but have not yet voted on the project.

The Post purchased 8 raffle tickets for Veterans' Day for cost of P3600.

NEW BUSINESS

We still have raffle tickets for Post 9892 Chili Cook-off in late November.  Comrade Best made a motion for the Post to purchase up to 10 books if any are remaining.  Motion seconded by Comrade Wright.  Motion was approved.

Comrade Schaeffer made a motion for the Building Committee and Post Home Committee to merge together. Motion seconded by Comrade Schrauben.  Following discussion, vote taken and motion approved.

Commander said that Comrade Jerry Kraus is running for a new Councilman position for Department of Pacific Areas.  Commander was going to ask for a motion for the Post to vote for approval of Comrade Kraus as Councilman during the Department Convention; however he recently found out that another Department Officer may also be running. This item will be brought up again at a future meeting.

The Adjutant said that the Canteen By-laws were reviewed by the Post Home Committee and some changes/revisions were made.  Changes were hi-lighted in yellow (copies were given to members for review prior to the meeting).  The Adjutant made the motion that the revised by-laws be approved at this meeting and forward to Department of the Philippines for Department approval.  Motion was seconded.  Following some discussion, vote was taken and motion approved.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

VFW Dept of the Pacific Raffle Tickets still available.  The cost is $10 for one ticket (P500):

  • First Prize $5000
  • Second Prize $2500
  • Third Prize $1000
  • Fourth Prize (5 winners) $500
  • Fifth Prize (10 winners) $250
  • Consolation Prize (25 winners) $100

Raffle will be held at the Dept CofA in December being held in Angeles City.  

Raffle Tickets for the 20th Annual Chili-Cook Off to be held in Nov at Post 9892 in La Union are on sale cost is P300 per book and prizes are First Place P15,000 ($348); second P8,000; third P4,000; forth P2,000 and fifth P1,000. 

Post 4 American Legion meeting on Sunday 13 Nov will be held at 1300 vice 10am. Post dues will increase from P1500 to P1700, however if you pay your 2012 dues before 1 Jan 2012 you can pay the early bird price of P1500. 

Fifty/fifty: Comrade Bristle won the 50/50 raffle.  P1500 was collected with P750 to the winner. Comrade Bristle donated P510 to the Post. Thanks Jerry.

CLOSING CEREMONIES: Closing Ceremonies were held according to Ritual and the meeting was adjourned at 1101 hours.  The next GMM will be held 14 Dec at 1000 hours at the Post Home.
