VFW Post 11447: March 2008 Meeting Minutes

Post Commander Alvarez called the meeting to order at 1000 on Wednesday, 12 March 2008.

There were 35 members in attendance and no guests.

Chaplain Hommel gave the opening prayer.

Commander led attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and Section 3 of the Congressional Charter.

The Roll Call was taken by the Adjutant. All present except Advocate Jim Correll and
Surgeon Larry Nirza who were excused and Trustee Bob Wright who was absent.

Commander asked if the minutes from the previous meeting had been posted:
The Adjutant reported they had and that one comment had been made and one correction made. Comrade Gordon made the motion to accept the minutes as posted, seconded by Comrade Best. Carried.

Commander called for the report of the Quartermaster:
QM Burnett presented the report. Trustees conducted an audit of QM records on 3 March.  No discrepancies found.  Comrade Gordon made the motion to accept the report as presented, seconded by Comrade Boruff.  Carried. The report is on file at the Post home, if anyone wants to see the report contact the Quartermaster.

Commander called for the Service Officer’s report:
Service officer Alvarez reported.
Past Commander “Sandy” Saunders is leaving the hospital today to return home. His health is not good and is declining.

Funerals are scheduled at Clark Cemetery on 13 March for Non-Member Larry Chrismen Who passed away in Iraq, and on 14 March for Life Member William Deason.

PHC Report:
1. Post Home Committee:  PHC Chairman Cox reported.  
Meeting was called to order at 10:00 on 10 March by Chairman Cox.  The following members were present: Commander Alvarez, QM Burnett, Chairman Cox, PHC Members Best, PHC Member Melvin “OB” O’Briant.

Also attending were: Buzz Bronson, Fain Boruff, Dennis Doty, Wayne Gordon, Carmen Hendricks, Seth Hendricks, Bob Koeppen, John Ray, Shorty Phillips, Ed Spears, Sully Sullivan, Tom Stone, and Acting Canteen Manager Reyna.

Audits and Reviews: 

  • PHC Members Mike Best and RC Cox conducted Post canteen end of the month inventory and daily chips on 29 Feb..  All 480 chips were accounted for.
  • Canteen records and funds were audited by the Trustees on 3 March.
  • PHC reviewed canteen monthly financial report and found it to be in good order.
  • Items for discussion with recommendations:
    1. PHC will review and upgrade the monthly menu based on last 4 months sales.
    2. PHC and canteen manager will devise a monthly employee appraisal form to be included in the employee’s file.
    3. PHC will review monthly canteen bills to ensure they are paid on time.
    4. Ask the Commander to form a committee to review prices on the menu. Carmen Hendricks has volunteered to do a price comparison to other local restaurants PHC Chairman will provide the necessary information to ensure that this is done in a timely manner. The cutoff date should be before the next scheduled PHC meeting to allow a vote by the membership at the meeting on 9 April.
Canteen Managers Report:
  • Kitchen hours have been reduced to: Open 6AM Close 5:30 PM.
  • All bills are paid and up to date with the exception of  SSS. This will be paid when the CPA gives us the breakdown.

Membership Committee:
SVC gave the report. Life membership stands at 368, 8 new members, 32 continuous and 2 reinstated for a percentage of 96.93.    Annual members who have not paid yet please do so; the list of names is posted on the bulletin board.

Amerasian Scholarship Committee:
SVC Reported that the coordinator tee shirts were very popular. It seems that the shirts are in high demand in the community, and he might order more.

Buddy Poppy Chairman:
Chaplain Hommel reported P 940 ($23.50) was collected for the Relief Fund.

Seam Squirrel Report:
Seam Squirrel Sullivan reported another good scratch. One member was initiated at this scratch. (Comrade Gordon completed his 3rd degree.) Elections were held and new officers are ready for installation. There will be one change to the elected officers at the next scratch due to a resignation.

Web Master:

Building Committee:
Quartermaster read a response from the Post Home owner. Our lease will not be renewed. We have been asked to vacate the premises by 8 Aug.

Beach Bash:
SVC Hendricks reported on the financial results, but there are some additional funds expected to be received.

Chaplain Hommel led the membership in reciting the National Home Prayer.

A presentation was made by a Life line agent about Tri-Care benefits. A Q & A session will be held on Friday, 14 March at the Post home.

Comrade Steakley reported that the FRA “FRALICS” will be held 4 thru 6 April.
There will also be an Easter Egg Hunt held Easter Sunday, at the FRA in San Antonio for children age 12 and under.

Comrade Hommel announced that there are AA meetings held at 13:00 on Mondays and Thursdays at the Post Home. All interested are welcome to attend.

A motion was made and seconded that our up-coming elections be held by asking Nominees to leave the room, then voting by show of hands. After discussion, this motion was carried.

Comrade Herb Scholten reported that the American Legion Regional Convention will be held on 26 April in Olongapo. It was noted that this date is in conflict with our District Meeting in La Union.

50/50 Raffle was won by Dan Steakley.  P3000 ($75.00) was collected, P1500 to Post Bldg Fund and P1500 to the winner.  Comrade Steakley donated his winnings to the Post General Fund.

Chaplain Hommel gave the Closing Prayer.

Commander adjourned the meeting at 11:25. Next Regular meeting will be held at the Post Home at 10:00, Wednesday 9 April. 2008.
