VFW Post 11447: June 2007 Meeting Minutes

Post Commander Correll called the meeting to order at 1000 on Wednesday, 13 June 2007.

There were 19 members in attendance.

Comrade Alvarez gave the opening prayer.

Commander led attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and Section 3 of the Congressional Charter.

The Roll Call was taken by the Adjutant. One officer unexcused absence, two excused.

Commander called for new recruits:
None

Commander called for distinguished guests:
None

Commander asked if the minutes from the previous meeting had been posted:
The Adjutant reported they had, and no comments or changes had been made. Comrade Alvarez made motion to accept the minutes as written, seconded by Comrade Best. Carried.

Commander called for the report of the Quartermaster:
QM Burnett presented the report. . Trustees audited the report on 4 June. Comrade Alvarez made the motion to accept the report as presented, seconded by Comrade Best. Carried. The report is on file at the Post home, if anyone wants to see the report contact the Quartermaster.

Commander called for the Service Officer’s report:
Service Officer Alvarez said that there was no date set for services for departed Comrade Steve Jurey.  However, if services are to be held in Barretto next week while the Dept Convention is going on, he would need volunteers since most officers may be at the convention.  If the services are held at Clark he would contact the Commander for a convenient time to conduct services there.

Post Home Committee Report:
PHC Chairman Cox reported.   Meeting was called to order at 0900 on 11 June by Chairman Cox.  The following members were present:

  Audit and Reviews:

  1. PHC Members Mike Best and RC Cox conducted Post canteen end of the month inventory on 31 May.  
  2. PHC Chairman inventoried daily draw chips. All 480 chips accounted for.
  3. Canteen records and funds for the month of April were audited by the Trustees on 4 June.
  4. PHC reviewed canteen monthly financial report and found it to be in good order.

Approved Recommendations: 

  1. Bar Dixie is now closed for business. Recommendation was made and approved  to have Bar Dixie dart team play at the VFW on Wednesday Dart League.  This will result in increase in Canteen sales.

Canteen Managers Report:

  1. Business is still slow and the Quartermaster paid the electric bill again.  Also I  would like to recognize and thank Lee Andersen (non-member) for donating P13,500 toward the Canteen Fund.

Meeting was adjourned at 0930.

Comments after report: Commander said that we need more support from the membership by frequenting the canteen more often, these are the slow months and we need customers. The QM gave a loan to the Canteen Manager of P55,000 to pay some of the bills for May and June.

Membership Committee:
SVC Boruff gave report. Life Members 370, New 9, Reinstated 8, Cont 36, Total 423 members.  No membership applications outstanding.

Amerasian Scholarship Committee:
Comrade Seth Hendricks reported that school supplies had been distributed to the students.  The field trip for 12 June has been delayed and will be held on the 8th of July.  Still time for members to make donations for the event as this is not a budgeted item.  A jar for donations is at the bar; put your name on the donor list and amount contributed. 

Buddy Poppy Chairman:
Comrade Alvarez reported P700 ($15.56) was collected for the Relief Fund.

Seam Squirrel Report:
Comrade Phillips not present but Blanket Bum Sullivan made an announcement. The Cooties will sponsor a Fourth of July celebration at 12:00 (noon).  There will be a lechon dinner for P300; foot long hot dogs with chili for P200 and all local beer P25.  There will also be a band.  Come out and enjoy the fun.

Web Master:
Commander said that if anyone notices any erroneous info on the site or has some inputs, contact the Adjutant and he will contact the Web Wizard. 

Building Committee:
Commander has sent another email to the owner concerning the lease.  We have just 14 months until the lease expires.

Comrade Alvarez led the membership in reciting the National Home Prayer.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

-  Adjutant reported that the Post 11447 pins that were voted on to purchase last month have been ordered and will probably be delivered during the Convention.

NEW BUSINESS

- Commander said that there was a vacancy in the PHC. Comrade Melvin “OB” O’Briant has been filling the position. The Commander opened nominations for 3rd Year PHC member. Comrade Alvarez nominated O’Briant. There were no other nominees. Nominations were closed and Comrade Koeppen made a motion that the Adjutant cast one unanimous vote, seconded by Comrade Best. Comrade O’Briant is the 3rd Year PHC member for the 2007-8 term.

- Comrade Cliff Wilsey (a Department Officer) delivered our raffle tickets to Post 2485.  The Clark Cemetery Chairman sent an email to the Commander requesting that a portion of our raffle sales be given to him for use in cemetery operations. Comrade Best made motion that all funds received from the sale of the tickets be kept at the Post and no contribution to the cemetery.  Seconded by Comrade Alvarez.  During discussion it was decided that due to the current financial situation of the Post, we could not afford to make a contribution.  Motion voted on and members voted not to make contribution.

- Comrade Cox made motion for the Post to sponsor a horseshoe team.  Seconded by Comrade Best.  Team application fee is P700 for the season.  The horseshoe team purchases a large amount of drinks and food from the canteen during these games.  Carried.

- Comrade Sullivan made motion for the Post to sponsor a dart team, which will play on Wednesdays starting July.  Seconded by Comrade Koeppen. Not sure of the cost of the team, but should be around P300.  Motion was changed to include capping the application fee at P700.  Carried.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

-   Comrade Bob Koeppen announced a Father’s Day BBQ at the FRA in San Antonio on the 17th.  Cost P250 adults, P150 children.

-   Comrade John Hunt reminded everyone that American Legion Post 4 will be holding KIA/MIA services on Sep 21 at 10:00.  Commander said he would like to see a good Post turnout at the service, only eight VFW Post members attended the services last year and most of them were also members of the American Legion.  Also, the Post will be holding their own KIA/MIA services, date and time to be announced later.

-  50/50 Raffle was won by Skip Robertson.  P1500 ($33) was collected, P750 to the Post and P750 to Comrade Robertson.    

Comrade Alvarez gave the Closing Prayer.

Commander adjourned the meeting at 10:45. Next meeting will be held at the Post Home at 10:00, Wednesday 11 July 2007.
