VFW Post 11447: January 2007 Meeting Minutes

Post Commander Correll called the meeting to order at 1000 on Wednesday, 10 Jan 2007.

There were 25 members in attendance.

Comrade Alvarez gave the opening prayer.

Commander led attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and Section 3 of the Congressional Charter.

The Roll Call was taken by the Adjutant and absentees noted.

Commander called for new recruits:
None

Commander called for distinguished guests:
None

Commander asked if the minutes from the previous meeting had been posted:
The Adjutant reported they had, and no comments or changes had been made.  Comrade Steakley made motion to accept the minutes as written, seconded by SVC Boruff. Carried.

Commander called for the report of the Quartermaster:
QM Burnett presented the report. He explained some of expenditures and told the membership that all Canteen bills have been paid to date with the Canteen now making all payments. He also said that the Post General Fund had a good month with only a decrease in funds of $38; no major expenditures are budgeted for January. Trustees audited the report on 8 Jan. SVC Boruff made the motion to accept the report as presented, seconded by JVC Corbin.  Carried. The report is on file at the Post home, if anyone wants to see the report contact the Quartermaster.

Commander called for the Service Officer’s report:
Comrade Alvarez said that the flag will be draped over the casket of Life Member Richard D. McGowan this afternoon.  Ceremonies and burial dates not confirmed at this time.  Commander also noted the passing of Comrade Chris Schrauben’s wife last month.

PHC Report:
1. Report of Jan meeting read by PHC Chairman Cox.

The meeting was called to order on Monday, 8 January by Chairman Cox.

Audits and Reviews: 

  • Canteen end of the month inventory was done on 31 Dec.
  • Trustees audited Canteen records and funds for the month of Dec.
  • PHC reviewed Canteen records and found them to be in good order.
Approved Recommendations:
  • New contract for Canteen Manager has been approved by PHC.
  • New membership list prepared for daily/weekly draws. Chip numbers have been     inventoried.
  • Post coffee cups arte on sale for P100.
  • Aircon and Generator have been sold for $300.
Canteen Managers Report:
  • All Canteen expenses have been paid and all bills are current.
  • Sales are improving.

Membership Committee:
SVC Boruff gave report. Life Members 370, New 5, Reinstated 5, Cont 35, Total 415 members. We reached our goal of 100% with percentage of 102.47%.  Membership dues have gone up on 1 January 2007.  Check the website vfw.org for new life membership prices.  Our annual membership dues were increased to $30. Commander suggested that when the General Fund gets well that the membership might consider offering an installment plan for members to obtain life memberships.

Amerasian Scholarship Committee:
The children had a great Christmas party with Comrade Michael “Big Mike” Best playing Santa.

Buddy Poppy Chairman:
Comrade Alvarez reported P550 ($11) was collected for the Relief Fund.

Seam Squirrel Report:
Comrade Phillips said that the scratch on 4 Jan went well with one new member being initiated.

Web Master:
One member, Fred McClure has volunteer for the position.  He lives in the states but has a computer and the time to spend on the site.  He will be here for the Beach Bash and if he still wants the position, things will be explained to him.

Building Committee:
The Commander met with the owner of the property last month. 

She will be given the following proposal for the lease and renovation:

  • 15 or 20 year lease with rent adjustment every 3 years. 
  • With a minimum 15 year lease, the following renovation will occur at VFW expense:
    • Resize septic tank to handle plumbing waste needs.
    • Relocate/renovate men & women comfort rooms
    • Renovate building plumbing.
    • Relocate and renovate the kitchen.
    • Repair, renovate roof as necessary.
    • Expand dining area into the current living area for residents.
    • Relocate Office space(s).
    • Note: It is estimated that the VFW will expend $10,000 to $20,000 in renovation of the building.
    • With only a 10 year lease the last item (Relocate Office) will not apply.

During discussion it was suggested that a clause be put in the lease that would say that in case of death of the owner the lease will remain in effect as is.

Beach Bash:
The next meeting would be held on Tue, Jan 16 at 0900.  Please attend we need many volunteers to help out. San Miguel Beer will provide a free stage for the Bash.  Lyn Travers will donate an announcement system and lights.  Solicitation is going well but need more volunteers to help out. 

CofA:
Quartermaster said that $858 was made during the event.

Comrade Alvarez led the membership in reciting the National Home Prayer.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Commander said that he and the Adjutant would be going to the Security Exchange Commission late January to get the revocation lifted. All paper work is finished. Not sure what the fine will be, but it could be as high as $200. The Commander read to the members the changes made to the Post By-laws. The Commander, Adjutant and Advocate will double check to ensure that the by-laws are in accordance with the new 2007 Congressional Charter and By-Laws which was just received. JVC Corbin made the motion that the new by-laws approved and sent to Department. Seconded by Comrade Alvarez. Carried.

NEW BUSINESS

Comrade Cox made a motion that the Post supports the horse shoe team this season by paying the dues of P1700 ($35). Seconded by JVC Corbin.  Carried.

Comrade Sullivan made a motion that the Post supports a dart team this season.  Seconded by Comrade Alvarez.  During discussion it was decided that the motion would not be voted on at this time.  Comrade Sullivan was asked to get more info including dart team members, cost, etc. and bring up as unfinished business next meeting.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

Comrade Koeppen said that a sign should be put up at the bar asking customers to try to have correct change when paying their bill.  Some customers give a P500 or P1000 note when paying a bill of less than P100. Referred to the PHC.                                                               

Commander said additional safes have been put out front.  QM said that 19 had been sold and one more would be purchased after the meeting.

Comrade Brady said that the FRA President would be visiting the FRA Branches on 14 Feb

Comrade Steakley passed out more information on TRICARE.

Comrade Bronson asked about the price for wall ads.  Wall ad space cost P1500 with a maintenance fee of P500 per year, total P2000.  The ad purchaser is responsible for obtaining the painter and paying him.

Comrade Doty, the winner of last months free steak dinner donated the price of the dinner towards the Canteen Mayors Permit fund.

50/50 Raffle was won by Comrade Hommel.  Total of P2000 ($41) was collected, P1000 to the Post and P1000 to Comrade Hommel who donated his to the General fund.  Thank you.

Commander adjourned the meeting at 1100.  Next meeting will be held at the Post Home at 1000, Wednesday 14 Feb 2007.
