January 2009
Service Officer Comrade Gerken reported that 50 vets passed away during the last 12 months. The RAO had acquired 36 new members during the same time frame so membership is still strong. Associate members have same rights in the RAO as regular members except they cannot use the FPO. Must use the RAO Olongapo post office box. Retirees who contribute to SBP and have been making payments for 30 years or more do not have to make additional payments upon reaching 70 years of age..

C of A Committee:  CofA went well with a lot of favorable comments. Thank you to all who contributed time and money.

Commander Alvarez had resigned due to health reasons.  Nominations were opened for   JVC.  Adjutant Dennis Doty was nominated and he had indicated to Commander Gordon that he would accept. No further nominations, nominations were closed until next meeting.  Vote for new JVC will be made at next meeting following closing of nominations.

February 2009
Commander Gordon said that it appears that the Beach Bash went well, however participation
was off from last year, but good anyway. Comrade Hendricks said that all scholars picked up their shirts and participated in the parade. About one month to go for the school year. Past Commander Correll reported that there were lots of good comments about the scholars’ shirts.

Nominations were re-opened for JVC for the remainder of this term. A motion was made by Past Commander Correll to vote by “show of hands” in the event that there was a member running un-opposed. The motion was seconded by comrade Best. Carried.
No further nominations were made. Comrade Doty was elected to fill the position of JVC.

March 2009
Comrade Alvarez reported six members (including five Cooties) held a funeral service for a Filipino-American Vet at Masinloc on 8 March.

C of A Committee: Reported by JVC Doty: Un-audited report. Total income from 2008 C of A P53,494. This was later revised by QM review to P42,494. JVC Doty mistakenly placed a hotel charge (P5500) in the wrong column on the form.

A motion was made by Past Commander Correll that we increase annual membership dues from $30 to $40 to take effect on 1 January 2010. The motion was seconded by Comrade Best. Discussion     ensued. After discussion, the motion was carried by a vote of 17 to 1.

A motion was made by Past Commander Correll to amend the Post By-Laws.
The amendments will include:
 Changes to our Post address to reflect our move last year. (Sections 102 & 301)
Changes to section 304 to allow posting of public information in our minutes, without posting private financial data.
Change to section 502 to allow ‘show of hands’ vote to officer elections when only one nominee is running.
The motion was seconded by JVC Doty

Due to the requirement to allow 20 days for members to decide, the motion was tabled until the next meeting

Apr 2009
Comrade Koeppen reported that Comrade Harold “Mike” Pickens is ill, and mostly stuck at home. He will accept visitors, but only with advance notice. If you know Mike, Please give him a call, and stop by to visit him when he is available. Also Comrade Billman is having trouble with his legs. It is reported that this is diabetes related. Comrade Billman still visits the post home about once per week. A phone Call or visit to let him know he is cared for would be good.

By-Laws: An additional change to our by-laws has been recommended by the QM to increase the monthly authorized expenditures for the PHC for Emergency Repairs to $100 from $ 50.00. Past Commander Correll’s motion to amend the Post By-Laws was reviewed by our esteemed Department Judge-Advocate Bill Wichmann. He has recommended several changes to bring our by-laws into compliance with National Standards. What Comrade Wichmann is proposing reflects no change to our by-laws, only legal wording. The proposed changes are submitted to the membership for approval. As a twenty day period is required for members to review proposed changes, we will vote on these changes at the May General Meeting

May 2009
A motion was made by Commander-Elect Correll to approve the amended By-laws as presented last meeting. Seconded by Comrade Best. The Motion carried with a unanimous vote.

Seam Squirrel Sullivan noted that there is a new Cootie Application waiting to be approved by the Post membership. SS spoke highly of this new applicant, Cletus Spalding and recommended approval. The post membership responded with approval.

All Elected / Appointed Officers for the 2009-10 year, who were present, were installed by District VII Commander Hilliard in a short ceremony, following the Regular meeting.

June 2009
C of A Committee:   Reported by JVC Doty: We do intend to bid on the C of A again at the convention. We also intend to bid on the Annual Department Convention. We have a favorable offer from the Wild Orchid to support our bid.

Commander Elect Correll introduced the proposed budget for the new fiscal year. There have been several cuts, and few additions. After much discussion, the budget was approved. Any member wishing to review the new budget should contact the quartermaster.

Commander-Elect Correll brought up the fact that we need to elect our delegates for the up coming Department Elections. After discussion, Comrade Correll nominated SVC Spears to carry our votes to the convention, and JVC Doty to act as alternate. The delegates were approved.

There will also be a BBQ family fun day on 4 July. The one on 4 July is the big one with music,swimming etc. We are seeking donations for the July 4 BBQ. Food, Beer and Money will all be gratefully accepted. A sign-up sheet is available in the Canteen.

JVC Doty mentioned that there will be a ceremony held at the Hellships Memorial on 1 July at 11:00 by the Australian Government and the RSL. They have requested attendance by VFW members in uniform.

August 2009
Mike Trimble remains in poor condition at home with no visitors requested. Comrade Buzz Bronson still needs type A- blood for transfusions.

SEC is done we are now a registered non profit organization.  We can legally own property.  Annual reports must be done yearly in January.  Failure to do so is why we got our SEC revoked last time. 

Commander Correll made a motion to extend our Fil/am raffle out for 9 months and increase the number of tickets.  Motion was seconded by Comrade Best. Carried

POW MIA day is September 19 go out and support the American legion activities on that day.

JUNE 2008

On 2 June Life Member  and Cootie Antonio “Tony” Baucom passed away.   
Life member Donald Oberloh passed away on 4 June.
Past Commander “Sandy” Saunders’ health is stable.
PHC Member “OB” O’Briant is having a difficult time getting around since his hip replacement.
He would like to have visitors, but only a few at a time.

Amerasian Scholarship: Tuition has been paid. Supplies have been handed out. Fifty Students now in program, with 51 on waiting list. Students in program are now back in school following summer break. The students on the waiting list were given school supplies thanks to Seth and Carmen Hendricks.

The new Post Home will be in the Dream Plaza, National Hwy, Matain, Subic. Construction of an outside bar and patio will begin in the next few days. $900.00 donations received so far. More is needed to complete the area. Grand Opening is set for 4 July.

July 2008
Past Commander Harlan K (Sandy) Saunders passed away at home on 6 July. Services were held on 12 July in the Chapel near his home, and at the Subic Memorial Gardens where he now rests. The services were attended by 22 members (14 Cooties). There was also a Wake held at his request at his home on 11 July. This was attended by a great many members and other friends and family.

Life member Jack Clark passed away on 13 July.

On 4 July the new Post Home at Dream Plaza in Matain, Subic was formally opened with a huge 4th of July celebration.

August 2008
Marshal Barton should be out of the hospital on 19 August. A walker has been located for his use.

Life member Dale Perce passed away in Las Vegas on 2 August.

Life member Phillip Galbreath passed away on 8 August.

Non-member but strong supporter of the Post Charles "Chuck" Demorse passed away on 8 August.

SVC Wayne Gordon is suffering health problems and has returned to the US for treatment. He expects to return within two months. Comrade Mike Trimble is also having health problems.

SEP 2008:

Youth Activities Chairman Seth Hendricks reported the Annual Scholars’ field trip to the water park is all set. Trip will be 20 Sept. Transportation has been arranged. Kids and adults are anxious to go! SS Sullivan remarked that donations are still needed to pay the bills. The Cooties of PT 11 donated P2000 for the field trip.

PT 11 Seam Squirrel Sullivan reported that the Cooties plan on holding a “NAVY DAY” Celebration at the Post on 13 OCT.  Food, Drink, and music (possibly a Jam session) or a live band.

Venue for the C of A is the beautiful “Wild Orchid Beach Resort”
This is a 5 star hotel, and we have arranged special rates. The C of A will be held on 4 to 6 December. The theme is “A Touch of Class”

Post members observed “POW/MIA Day” which were held at American Legion Post 4 in Olongapo City. The Post and PUP TENT 11 were represented.

Oct 2008
Comrade Marshal Barton passed away on 7 Oct. Buried at Clark Cemetery with services performed by Post Officers and members on 14 Oct.

Department Inspector Jerry Prinze conducted inspection of Post prior and during the monthly meeting on 8 Oct. QM and Adjustant records were inspected and found to be in good order. Inspector likes the board the QM uses during the meeting when giving the QM report, will recommend it to the other Posts. Commander Alvarez held a good meeting. Post passed inspection.

Nov 2008
Capt Jack McDonald passed away on 9 Nov in Florida. Plans are being made to hold memorial service for him at the Post.

Comrade Mike Trimble still not oding well does not want visitors.

Veterans Day. Eleven members attended services at Clark Cemetery, six at the Hellships Memorial at SBMA, two at the American Cemetery in Manila and two in the States.

Dec 2008
Comrade Trimble is out of the hospital and resting at home. Doing better.

Cootie Buzz Bronson is in the hospital for a hernia and pneumonia. Coots from the PT will visit him.

SVC Gordon relieved Commander Alvarez due to health reasons. Comrad Gordon assumed duties of Commander and JVC Spears assumed duties of SVC. Nominations for JVC will be accepted at January meeting.

January 2008
9 – 18 Members attended our Monthly Post Meeting. 2 officers absent, 2 were excused. We had no guests.

Quartermasters Report: QM Burnett presented the report. Trustees conducted an audit of QM records on 7 January. No discrepancies found.

Surgeons Report: NTR.

Service Officer’s Report: Comrade John Frey is in the hospital, but off Life Support. Still very weak, but health is improving. E-Mail concerning John is posted on the Bulletin Board.
Comrade Chester Gross is out of Makati Medical Center, but in Gordon Hospital for follow-up treatment.
Past Commander “Sandy” Saunders is now improving, but is in need of financial help. He may also require more Type A- blood in the near future. He is in Gordon Hospital, but has requested NO visitors at this time. (Sandy now at home and resting, still no visitors at this time).

Member in Distress: A motion was made by Comrade “Sully” Sullivan to donate $ 500.00 from the Post relief fund to Comrade Saunders. The motion was seconded by Comrade Tom Burnett. Discussion: QM said money was available in Relief Fund. Donations from other members will be accepted by Comrade Sullivan or the QM. --Carried

Post Home Committee: PHC Chairman Cox reported.

A. Audit and Reviews:

1. PHC Members Mike Best and RC Cox conducted Post canteen end of the month inventory and daily chips on 31 Dec. All 480 chips were accounted for.

2. Canteen records and funds were audited by the Trustees on 7 Jan.

3. PHC reviewed canteen monthly financial report and found it to be in good order.

4. Canteen Managers Report:
a. Quartermaster paid 10, 000.00 Peso to employee 13TH month.
b. Kitchen Sales are improving, Bar Sales increased from previous month, and inventories are good.

Membership Committee: SVC gave the report. Life membership stands at 368, 6 new members, 26 continuous and 2 reinstated for a percentage of 95.04. One annual members dues and one life new member are being processed. Annual members who have not paid yet please do so; the list of names is posted on the bulletin board.

Amer-Asian Scholarship Committee: SVC reported that the Christmas Party for the Scholarship Kids went well. There was plenty of joy and food for everyone. Thanks to all who donated and helped with the party. The kids’ Tee shirts for the Beach Bash this year will include a sponsor.

Seam Squirrel: We had another good scratch. A second degree initiation was completed for a new member. Third degree will be completed next scratch.
Pup Tent 11 has purchased an Ice Grinder for their Snow-Cone operation during the Beach Bash.
They have also purchased a deep fryer for use in their annual fish fry, and are willing to loan it to the canteen when not needed by the Cooties.

Building Committee: Quartermaster has received (finally) an answer from the owners of our Post Home. They were not happy with the improvements observed during their visit early last year. Asked that the proposals for a new lease with any proposed improvements be sent to them. QM sent the proposal. (QM sent them the proposal previously in Aug). Waiting for reply from the owners.

CofA: Comrade Burnett reported that the event was a great success but turn-out was slightly less than last year’s.

Beach Bash: SVC Hendricks reported that money in starting to come in. Arrangements are looking good. All future meetings will be at the Post home at 10:00 on every Tuesday until the Beach Bash. The Beach Bingo Is scratched— it is not cost effective. We will have a Beach Trivia Contest instead.

Comrade R.C. Cox made a motion to give the donated bicycle to our long-time handy-man Wilson. Seconded by Comrade “Buzz” Bronson. After discussion, the motion carried

Comrade Koeppen reported that deceased Post Commander Gann’s step-daughter and her friend were injured in a jeepney accident recently. Both are doing well at this time. No further info available.

The Australian organization RSL is asking us to sell raffle tickets to their annual fund raiser. They have been, and continue to be a good supporter of this post. A motion was made by Comrade Phillips and seconded for the post to purchase 1 book. (P1000.00) —carried.

Quartermaster reported that we are again preparing to register for the SEC. Members with ACR cards are needed to be listed as trustees.

A final note for the month.
During January, the members of the post provided memorial / burial services for 4 non-member veterans.

The widow of Gene Gann is having trouble getting money from the bank. Service Officer Alvarez asked for her to contact him. He will assist.

It was reported that correspondence was received in an attempt to locate a Mike Vincent. The Service Officer reported that Mike Vincent passed away several years ago.

50/50 Raffle was won by Ralph (RC) Cox. P1400 ($34) was collected, P700 to Post Bldg Fund and P700 to the winner.

13 -17 16th Annual Barrio Barretto Beach Bash. Initial indications are that it was very successful.

14 – 30 Post members (Including 8 Cooties) attended the Graveside services for life member Chester Gross.
He was very popular in the community and his services were attended by a very large crowd.

Also attending were Buzz Bronson, Fain Boruff, Dennis Doty Wayne Gordon, Carmon Hendricks, Seth Hendricks, Bob Koeppen, John Ray, Shorty Phillips, Ed Spears, Sully Sullivan, Tom Stone, and Acting Canteen Manager Reyna.

A. Audit and Reviews:

2. Canteen records and funds were audited by the Trustees on 3 March.

3. PHC reviewed canteen monthly financial report and found it to be in good order.

  1. Items for discussion with recommendations:
    1. PHC will review and upgrade the monthly menu based on last 4 months sales.
    2. PHC and canteen manager will devise a monthly employee appraisal form to be included in the employee’s file.
    3. PHC will review monthly canteen bills to ensure they are paid on time.
    4. Ask the Commander to form a committee to review prices on the menu. Carmon Hendricks has volunteered to do a price comparison to other local restaurants PHC Chairman will provide the necessary information to ensure that this is done in a timely manner. The cutoff date should be before the next scheduled PHC meeting to allow a vote by the membership at the meeting on 9 April.

5. Canteen Managers Report:
a. Kitchen hours have been reduced to: Open 6AM Close 5:30 PM.

  1. All bills are paid and up to date with the exception of SSS. This will be paid when the CPA gives us the breakdown.

Amer-Asian Scholarship Committee: SVC Reported that the coordinator tee shirts were very popular. It seems that the shirts are in high demand in the community, and he might order more.

Buddy Poppy Chairman: Chaplain Hommel reported P940 ($23.50) was collected for the Relief Fund.

Seam Squirrel: Seam Squirrel Sullivan reported another good scratch. One member was initiated at this scratch. (Comrade Gordon completed his 3rd degree.) Elections were held and new officers are ready for installation. There will be one change to the elected officers at the next scratch due to a resignation.

Building Committee: Quartermaster read a response from the Post Home owner. Our lease will not be renewed. We have been asked to vacate the premises by 8 Aug.

Beach Bash: SVC Hendricks reported on the financial results, but there are some additional funds expected to be received.

23 – Several members and their families gathered with the members of the FRA in San Antonio for an American Style Easter Egg Hunt. Families brought picnic lunches or purchased hamburgers and hot dogs from the FRA. A great time was had by all attendees.

Quartermasters Report: QM Burnett presented the report. Trustees conducted an audit of QM records on 3 April. No discrepancies found.

Service Officer’s Report: Past Commander “Sandy” Saunders' health is stable.
Past Commander James Correll returned to the hospital this date. Reason is not known at this time.

Member or Family member in distress: Comrade Mike Trimble is wheelchair bound at home and would like to have some visitors. His birthday is today!

Post Home Committee: PHC Chairman Cox reported.
Meeting was called to order at 10:00 on 7 April by Chairman Cox. The following members were present: Commander Alvarez, Chairman Cox, PHC Members Best, PHC Member Melvin “OB” O’Briant. QM Burnett was excused.

A. Audit and Reviews:

1. PHC Members Mike Best and RC Cox conducted Post canteen end of the month inventory and daily chips on 31 March. All 480 chips were accounted for.

2. Canteen records and funds were audited by the Trustees on 3 April.

3. PHC reviewed canteen monthly financial report and found it to be in good order.

  1. A committee has been appointed to review menu pricing. The committee consists of Dennis Doty as Chairman, Carmen Hendricks, R. C. Cox, Mike Best, John Ray, “Shorty” Phillips, Ed Spears, Wayne Gordon.

The committee meets every Tuesday morning at 09:00. This schedule will continue until the menu review is completed.

  1. Approved Recommendations:

A. Carmen Hendricks has been selected as Canteen Manager effective 15 April. At this time, the Trustees will conduct a complete audit of the canteen records.

B. The Aircon in the dining room will be turned on from 11:00 until 15:00 daily.

C. All bar prices will be increased by five pesos effective Monday, 14 April. Kitchen prices will be adjusted at a later date, after recommendations from the menu review committee.

D. For the free steak dinner, the customer will sign their name on back of ticket and place it in the box provided. Effective immediately.

6. Canteen Report:

Amer-Asian Scholarship Committee: SVC Reported that the mother of one of our Scholarship Kids died of heat stroke in the past few days.

Buddy Poppy Chairman: Chaplain Hommel reported P 500 ($12.50) was collected for the Relief Fund.

Seam Squirrel: Seam Squirrel Sullivan reported another good scratch. The FRA Chili Cook-off was great. Cooties took second place.

Comrade Spears recommended that in the future, burial details should wait until the services are completed before leaving the site, instead of leaving while the Philippine Military (or other organization) perform their rites.
Comrade Steakley reported that the FRA’s FRALICS went very well, with a good golf tournament, good chili cook-off and great beauty contest.

50/50 Raffle was won by Tom Burnett. P2600 ($65.00) was collected, P1300 to Post Bldg Fund and P1300 to the winner, Comrade Burnett donated his to General Fund.

10 - Six Members (Including 5 Cooties) attended a special re-dedication of the "HELLSHIPS MEMORIAL". There were also Five Survivors of those horrendous ships in attendance. The Members held a Flag Folding Ceremony, and presented the Flag to the eldest survivor.

25 - 5 members (All Cooties) attended the District Meeting In Bauang, La Union.
Immediately thereafter, all also attended an ANZAK Celebration. (Australian Veterans Day).

Service Officer’s Report: Service officer Alvarez reported. Life member Ralph Hess passed away on 5 May in the United States.
Past Commander Harland K. (Sandy) Saunders’s health continues to decline. A contingent of nine Cooties visited him on 1 May. He is no longer able to speak. Each Cootie went in to see him on a one at a time basis, per his wishes. No Cootie came from his room dry-eyed!
Past Commander James Correll is now out of the hospital and is starting to rejoin post activities slowly.
The newly appointed Service Officer is Terry Gerken. Terry is now the Second in command at the RAO, and as such already has a desk there. Terry has served as a Service Officer at the RAO when he was RAO Director in Cebu, so he has some experience. Commander Alvarez will continue to provide Post services as Service Officer in The Post Funeral Detail, and to provide assistance to Comrade Gerken as needed.

. A motion was made by Comrade Phillips to accept a proposal from the owner of DREAM PLAZA. The motion was seconded by comrade Gordon.
An extended discussion followed, ending with a vote which carried.
The contract will be reviewed, and money was donated (by an anonymous donor) to pay the initial signing expense .
A motion was made by Adj. Doty to make the annual Fil / Am Day raffle prizes to be P10,000; P5,000; P 3,000 and P2,000, and to get the tickets on the market as soon as possible. Motion was seconded by Past Commander Bristol. The motion carried.
The new annual budget was introduced by Quartermaster Burnett, motion to accept by Adj. Doty, Second by Comrade Spears. The motion carried.

50/50 Raffle was won by Comrade Phillips. P2100 ($50.00) was collected, P1050 to Post Bldg Fund and P1050 to the winner. Comrade Phillips donated his winnings to the Post to use as needed. ---Thanks Shorty!

25 - 4 Members (all Cooties) attended a memorial service sponsored by the American Ambassador
at the American Cemetery on Fort Bonifacio in Manila. The cemetery is very impressive with 17,000 World War II veterans interned there.

30 - 17 Members (8 Cooties) attended memorial services hosted by the American Legion at Clark Cemetery in Angeles City. Some of the members also visited our Namesake's grave while we were there.

Seam Squirrel: Seam Squirrel Sullivan reported another good scratch. Flowers were sent to Tony Baucom’s service in San Antonio, TX.
SS Sullivan visited Sandy before the meeting. Sandy seemed in good spirits. Sandy gave a donation of $75.00 for the John Randal Scholarship Fund.
SS will be in Pattaya for the Department Convention / Grand Swarm next week.

Building Committee: The New Post Home is in the Dream Plaza. Construction of an outside bar and patio will begin in the next few days. $900.00 donations received so far. More is needed to complete the area. Grand Opening is set for 4 July.

Beach Bash: The First Beach Bash meeting will be held on Tuesday 8 July at 10:00 AM.

New Business: A Motion was made by Comrade Phillips and seconded to allow the attending delegates to decide who the post votes will be placed for. Actual votes will be made by JVC Gordon. After discussion, the motion carried.

14 to 20 – Four members attended the DPA Convention in Pattaya Thailand. All thought the Convention went well and enjoyed their visit there.
The post won two Humanitarian Awards.

JULY 2008
4 – The Post held a BBQ dinner and party to celebrate the grand opening of the new post home at Dream Plaza. We had a huge turnout! We ran out of food by 6:00 PM and had to send out for more beer at the same time. The party finally wound down about 9:00 PM. All this in the middle of a (Small) typhoon!

11 – Prior to his passing, Past Commander Saunders, had asked his Wife (Joy) to hold “a bit of an Irish Wake for me”. This request was granted on this evening, and was attended by many friends and family members. Included in those friends were , by one count, 14 Cooties, and 6 other members.

12 – A memorial service was held for Sandy at a small chapel near his home to an overflow crowd. SS Sully Sullivan did an outstanding eulogy for Sandy. A short time later Sandy was interned at Subic Memorial Gardens. The internment was attended by 22 Members.

13 – Life member Jack Clark Passed away at home with his family by his side.

15 – A memorial Service was held in conjunction with the FRA In San Antonio for Life Member Jack Clark. It was attended by 9 members.

18 – The post hosted the quarterly Cooties Swarm.

19 – The post hosted the quarterly District Meeting.
