VFW Post 11447: August 2006 Meeting Minutes

Post Commander Correll called the meeting to order at 1000 on Wednesday, 9 August 2006.

There were 26 members in attendance.

Comrade Alvarez gave the opening prayer.

Commander led attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and Section 3 of the Congressional Charter.

The Roll Call was taken by the Adjutant and absentees noted.

Commander called for new recruits:

Commander called for distinguished guests:

Commander asked if the minutes from the previous meeting had been posted:
The Adjutant reported they had, and no comments or changes had been made. Comrade Alvarez made motion to accept the minutes as written, seconded by JVC Corbin. Carried.

Commander called for the report of the Quartermaster:
QM Burnett presented the report. Report was audited on 7 Aug by Trustees. Comrade Alvarez made the motion to accept the report as presented, seconded by Comrade SVC Boruff. Carried. The report is on file at the Post home, if anyone who wants to see the report contact the Quartermaster.

Commander called for the Service Officer's report: Comrade Marshall Barton out of the hospital, Comrade Charlie Loughridge is still in the hospital in the ICU unit. Still needs financial assistance, donations welcomed. Also, the Commander is trying to get Charlie moved to a room and get him out of ICU, however he will need assistance from members. He needs to be turned over every four hours, volunteers are needed to do this and spend a little time with him. A nurse will be present to assist in moving him. Volunteers can contact Service Officer Jose Alvarez. Funeral service will be held for non-member Michael Vincent on 10 Aug at his resident at 1000. Need volunteer for perform functions as OOD as RC Cox is sick. Mike Gallant volunteered.

PHC Report:
Report of 7 Aug meeting read by Commander Correll in absence of PHC Chairman.

1. Post Home Committee: Chairman Cox called the meeting to order at 0900.

Audits and Reviews

  1. Audits and Reviews
    1. Canteen records were audited on 7 Aug by trustees and found to be correct and accurate.
    2. Chairman Cox reviewed the canteen profit/loss statement and found it to be true and accurate.
  2. Comrade Rich Truax has collected funds to pay two guards severance pay and hire one civilian guard. Pup Tent 11 will provide additional funds. Severance of employment will be done on the 15 th of Aug.
  3. Canteen Managers Report
    1. Turkey dinner was very successful on the 22 nd of July during District VII meeting.
    2. The Post needs a highchair for the Canteen. If anyone has one to donate see the Canteen Manager. If none were donated one would need to be purchased for approx P1500.
    3. Roof Repair. The roof has several leaks that need to be taken care of due to safety concerns (slippage). PHC Ben Dela Vega volunteered to inspected the roof and assist in repairs.

The meeting was adjourned at 1000 hours.

Membership Committee:
SVC Boruff gave report. New 4, Cont 4, Total 8, 1.98%. Several applications are being processed.

Amerasian Scholarship Committee:

Buddy Poppy Chairman: Comrade Alvarez reported P520 ($10) was collected.

Seam Squirrel Report:
Comrade Phillips reported that two events were held in July, the first was the normal Scratch on the 6 th and the second was the Swarm held during District VII visit to the Post on the 21st. A Social was held later that day. All had fun. All VFW members are invited to attend the Social on the 8 th of Sept.

Beach Bash:
JVC Corbin said that raffle tickets need to be printed and there is a need for donated items to be raffle/auction off at the Bash. Meetings will be starting soon to discuss fund raising, events etc.

CofA:
Registration is going well. All who plan to attend even if you are not going to stay at a local hotel need to register so that we know who is going and whether they will attend the banquet or not and name tags can be made.

Comrade Alvarez led the membership in reciting the National Home Prayer.

NEW BUSINESS

1. Commander told membership that Comrade John Frey is moving to Florida next month for medical reasons. John paid up his wall ad for three years. He continued to say that John was a great member and helped the Post in many ways over the years and he will be greatly missed. Comrade Phillips made motion that the wall ad for John be dedicated to him and his family and to remain free of additional funds for rental and touch-up indefinitely. Seconded by Comrade Alvarez. Carried.

2. Due to shortage of funds available for upcoming bills and events, QM made motion that funds from the Draws be made available to General Funds vice Building Fund for six months. Seconded by Comrade Alvarez. After lengthy discussion and several proposed changes to the original motion Comrade Gallant made motion that funds from the draw to go to General Fund starting 9 Aug to 1 Feb. Seconded by Comrade Sullivan. Carried.

3. Commander explained the situation of the roof and shed for new generator. He said that the roof is in need of repairs and that an assessment of repair hardware is being made. He said that P10000 was already approved for the building of the shed for generator and that additional fund to added to that figure for roof repairs and taken from the Building Fund. Comrade Alvarez made motion that funds from Building Fund be approved for roof repairs. Seconded by JVC Corbin. After discussion it was decided that additional funds be provided not to exceed P8000. Carried.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

1. Comrade Koeppen said that an audit was done on books and funds of the Canteen and found accurate. He continued to say that members should frequent the Canteen more. If there is little participation by members the Canteen cannot should a profit. Comrade Koeppen also donated dental supplies, gloves, cotton balls, etc for the Medical, Dental Outreach Program. Comrade Landry said that new member Scott Ludwig has mail a large package with supplies for the program and money and additional supplies sent. He has collection boxes on his counter for donation of funds from his customers.

2. Comrade Sullivan said that the Post should look into starting a Dart Team next season, it will help bring in revenue for the Canteen.

3. QM read a brochure from National concerning the Legacy Life Membership. This program is opened to all life members. It has three membership categories, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze starts at $400, Silver $800 and Gold $1200. When a member passes away, the post will receive a yearly payment in the members name indefinitely. Application and pamphlets were place in the Canteen on top of the glass case holding Post items for sale. You can also register on-line at www.vfw.org (click onto membership then Legacy Life Membership).

4. Comrade Alvarez said that he has raffle tickets for sale for American Legion Post 4, P200 per book.

5. Comrade Gross (the RAO Director) said that the Mabuhay Shriners would participate in the Post's Outreach Medical and Dental program again this year. They will provide medical supplies and other assistance. He continue to say that if anyone hears of a child suffering from burns to bring the child immediately to the RAO, they have in stock a quantity of Silverdine that was provided by the U.S. Navy. It is an ointment for burns and kills pain and aids in healing.

Also, the RAO is again in need of volunteers to help in the mail runs on Monday and Thursday. The van leaves at 3:30 am. Several volunteers are needed so that one person would not be called upon every run.

Comrade Gross reminded everyone of the next U.S. Embassy representatives to visit Olongapo area. The outreach will be on Friday, 25 Aug from 8am to 11am at the Vista Marina Hotel, Marista Restaurant, Ground Floor, Subic Bay Freeport. Posted on the bulletin board.

6. 50/50 Raffle was won by Comrade Phillips. Total of P2100 was collected, P1100 to the Building Fund and P1000 to Comrade Phillips.

Comrade Alvarez gave the Closing Prayer.

Commander adjourned the meeting at 1115. Next meeting will be held at the Post Home at 1000, Wednesday 13 Sep 2006.
