VFW Post 11447: April 2011 Meeting Minutes

OPENING CEREMONIES:Commander Doty called the meeting to order at 1000 hours, 13 APR.  Opening ceremonies were held according to VFW Ritual. Eighteen Post 11447 members were present and one visitor.

ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS:The Roll Call was taken by Adjutant Burnett.  Six officers were present and four excused.  

NEW RECRUITS: None

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS: Dane Randolph, 21 year Navy vet, visiting from Florida.

MINUTES: Commander asked if the minutes from the previous meeting had been posted.  The adjutant said that a copy of revised minutes were posted 13 Mar on the bulletin board and sent to members via email. Original minutes were amended after Adjutant received an email that said that an item was not in the minutes. Adjutant checked his notes and realized he missed an item.   The minutes are also available on the website www.vfw11447.org.  The Adjutant made the motion to accept the minutes as amended, seconded by Comrade Spears, motion carried.

QUARTERMASTER REPORT: Commander called for the report of the Quartermaster: QM Burnett presented the report and made the motion to accept the report as presented, seconded by Comrade Spears, motion carried. The audit was conducted on 13 APR.  The report is on file, if anyone wants to see the entire report, contact the QM. Funds available as of 31 MAR 2011:

COMRADE OR FAMILY MEMBER IN DISTRESS: While not a member, the family of Donald Shoney is trying to locate him. They haven't heard from him since Dec. Don is in his eighty's. If anyone knows Don or his current location contact the Commander.

COMMANDER CALLED FOR COMMITTEE REPORTS:

MEMBERSHIP REPORT: QM Burnett gave the report. We had finally reached 100% with assistance from Comrade Bob Zaher Past Dept Commander and Bob Chesko Post 2485 Commander who helped us get reinstated members.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:The kids' field trip is still pending.  They will visit Mt Samat, a memorial dedicated to the WWII defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, and the Americans, Filipinos and other allies who were part of the Bataan Death March. After the visit the kids will enjoy the afternoon swimming.  Chaperons may be needed.  Carmen Hendricks who has been working with the kids and the program for many years is requesting a relief.  The potential new relief will be required to assist enrollment at the schools, review report cards to ensure that the students are attending school and obtaining required grades to remain in the program. Also, purchases and distributes school supplies and assists with the children's Christmas Party and Beach Bash parade.

BUDDY POPPY CHAIRMAN: Chaplain Alvarado reported that P440 ($10.23) has been collected at the meeting, thanks to all who donated.

BUILDING COMMITTEE: Canteen is doing well, participation is good and food service is available, however it is fast food not complete meals as served at our prior Post canteens.

CofA: Commander asked if a member would make a motion to discuss the Post assuming the 2012 Department Convention.  Comrade Burnett made the Motion and seconded by Comrade Spears. Discussion: Commander said that he would like the Post to sponsor the 2012 convention. Would need several volunteers to make it successful and believes that the Post could handle it. After discussion with members a vote was taken and the Post will present its proposal to Department at this years Convention.

BEACH BASH COMMITTEE: Preparations for next year's Bash will probably begin in July.

PUP TENT 11: Incoming Seam Squirrel Sullivan said that they had a good Scratch on 7 April. Initiations will begin next month for new Cooties. Cooties Sully and Robert Smith along with Comrade Ben Dela Vega and Sully's wife Ayl participated in the FRALICS Chili Cook-off and took Third Place. The back bar at the FRA was dedicated to departed Post member and Seam Squirrel Ted "Shorty" Phillips at the FRALICS.

POST HOUSE COMMITTEE: NTR

VFW NATIONAL HOME FOR CHILDREN: Commander asked Chaplain Alvarado to ask Divine blessings upon our National Home for Children.

Commander asked if there were any additional nominations for Post Officers.  Nominations from last meeting are below and vacant positions listed.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

The Commander said that the Post Canteen is looking for a manager on a voluntary basis.  Member with some business experience is preferred. Contact the Commander if interested.  PHC will interview and select a volunteer if any.

Comrade Chris Schrauben said that the VVA from Angeles City would be holding their meeting on the 3rd of May at 1200 at American Legion Post 4 in Olongapo. The meeting is open to all vets, VVA membership not required.  A Social will be held afterwards.

Comrade Cliff Havilland asked when the FRA will hold their meeting here as reported last month.  Commander said that a date has not been set yet, but when it is, the date and time will be posted and sent via email.

Comrade Wright won the 50/50 raffle (first time since the Post started).  P1700 was collected. Comrade Wright put his winnings on the bar for drinks after the meeting.  Thanks Bob.

CLOSING CEREMONIES: Closing Ceremonies were held according to Ritual and the meeting was adjourned at 1120 hours.  The next GMM will be held on 11 May at 1000 hours at the Post Home.
